Emergency light testing
The purpose of emergency lighting is to ensure that the safety lighting is provided promptly, automatically, for a suitable time and in a specified area when the normal mains power supply to the usual lighting installation fails.
Monthly testing:
- Switch off the mains power
- Walk past all emergency lights to ensure they are working
- Note any defects and have them repaired immediately
- Record your results in your safety logbook
Yearly testing:
- Switch off the mains power supply to the lighting unit
- Leave the units illuminated for the rated period (usually three hours) – the lights should be on for the whole period
- Note any defects and get repaired immediately
- Record your results in your safety logbook
